At Fair Acres Federation, we recognise that reading is the most fundamental skill that children need to learn. Reading is an essential skill for participation in all areas of life. Our core aim is for children to become confident and independent readers who gain not only understanding, but also real pleasure from the reading activities and texts they engage with.

Developing fluency beyond Year 1
Reading Assessments are carried out across the school for children in Year 2-3. It assesses children’s reading speeds and ensures an accurate match to a level of reading.
Broad choice of texts
We follow the Little Wandle Fluency programme supporting the teaching of the Big Cat for Little Wandle Fluency books. They include an inclusive mix of fiction and non-fiction. The 40 books progress from Fluency 1 to Fluency 10. Fluency 1 books are designed for a reading speed of 60wpm (the expected level at the end of the Little Wandle programme) and Fluency 10 for a reading speed of 120wpm (beyond the expected level for Year 3).
