What is a School Governor?

Governors are volunteers who work as part of a team to support and challenge the school leadership. They help set the strategic direction of the school, ensure high standards of education and safeguarding, monitor progress, and make decisions about finances, staffing, and policies. Most importantly, governors help make a positive difference to the lives of our pupils and our wider school community.

Qualities we are looking for in a governor:

• A commitment to improving outcomes for all pupils
• An interest in education and the work of schools
• The ability to work as part of a team, listen, and ask questions
• Good communication and analytical skills
• Reliability and the time to attend meetings and training
• Enthusiasm and willingness to contribute ideas and challenge when needed
• You will ideally have experience of developing strategies, as well as knowledge, experience or training that would help promote diversity and inclusion

Time Commitment:

Our Governors have a term of office of 4 years. Full Governing Body meetings are held 6 times a year in the evening. Governors who are members of our Finance Committee also attend finance meetings 6 times per school year (currently held during the school day). Occasional monitoring visits to the schools (within the school day) and training are also key parts of the Governor role.

To ensure eligibility, applicants must provide the necessary information for DBS and Section 128 checks within 21 days of appointment – otherwise they may unfortunately be disqualified.
