Dragon Class - Family Christmas Reading Event 30.11.16

Dragon class pupils invited their families to a Wintery themed Reading Event. A range of activities were on offer from a role play Nativity Area, a 'Christmas at Home' reading corner, phonics play, write and post a letter to Santa plus a wintery wonderland outdoor area with snowballs, a snow palace and snowman. All areas were well stocked with books on a winter and Christmas theme. The children told us they like bedtime reading and decided to dress up in pyjamas to give the event a cosy feel. To end the event families and pupils joined together for a cosy storytime with dimmed lights to show off the twinkly lights. It felt very Christmassy and has been a great way to start the festive season. The experience highlighted the many different ways that pupils can enjoy books and how books can be linked to a range of other activities. Reluctant readers can see that books can be explored in many different ways and readers who need more challenge can extend their knowledge and understanding through wider questioning and more enhanced experiences. Overall we had lots of fun!

The event enabled pupils, teachers and parents the chance to meet and enjoy a shared experience. Parents often tell us that their children don't always remember what they have done during the school day. The event allowed pupils the chance to discover all the provision alongside their families.

Feedback from parents and family members has been very positive and they have asked us to repeat the event with a different theme.
